Asset tracking is one of the most common uses of RFID.

Companies can put RFID tags on assets that are often lost, stolen, underutilized or that are just hard to locate when they are needed.

RFID has long been used for electronic keys to control access to office buildings or reserved areas within offices.

The advantage of RFID is that it is convenient (an employee or visitor can hold up a badge to unlock a door, rather than looking for a key or swiping a magnetic stripe card) and because there is no contact between card and reader, there’s less maintenance.

Automation of identification on security seals has been a hot topic for several years.  Studies have revealed that 25% of human error is made when writing down container seal serial numbers and verifying documentation.

1D and 2D barcodes can help with this problem but are not ideal:

  • If the barcode is damaged, it cannot be automatically read;
  • If the barcode or data matrix code is dirty, they cannot be read either;
  • Reading of a 1D barcode is only possible with a hand held reader at short distance;
  • Reading of a 2D barcode is possible at a longer distance with a high definition camera,  provided that the weather conditions are good (daylight, no heavy rain or snow, no fog).
  • By introducing RFID on security seals a lot of the above mentioned inconveniences can be avoided:
  • RFID seals can be read with a hand held reader at a distance between 0.5 and 1.5 m but it can also be automatically read, at 4 to 6m distance, by means of antennas fitted at entrance gates.
  • Automatically reading does not require visibility of the seal with the eye and can be done  even if the seal is dirty or during harsh weather conditions, such as heavy rain, fog, snow, and even at night;
  • The reading of RFID seals is errorless and requires less than 1 second.

IMMEDIATELY COMPATIBLE FOR USE WITH ALL SYSTEMS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD

RFID technology still remains  a challenge for researchers, as they aim to develop tags which are more sensitive and more intelligent to meet consumer requirement.

In the future, experts predict that RFID will manage the whole supply chain, with manufacturers identifying each consumer product with a unique number that can be read by means of an RFID signal.

This unique number will  be combined with  additional information stored in a database of various partners of the logistic chain.  This system is called EPC global Network.

The EPC global Network provides specific information on individual products, such as production date, expiry date, and colour as well as tracking the product along the logistics chain, from the production line, to container shipment to the end user.

LEGHORN srl, is one the leading companies in the security seal industry, specializing in high security seals for containers and logistics. We’re proud to present the latest addition to our range of seals: one of the first RFID seals for containers.

RFID NEPTUNESEAL is tested and certified as ISO 17712:2013.

It’s user friendly, can be applied by any container terminal that have RFID reader gates and then integrated with their container movement management systems.

The seal can be read at several meters’ distance and reduces the risk of human error.  It’s printed with an identification number and fitted with an internal memory that can be used to store data.

Other possible applications for the internal memory:

  • Date of container movement
  • Type of operation
  • Operator that carried out the container movement
  • Location where the movement was taken place
  • Number of the Seal. A further identification number can be added for extra security.

The RFID tags applied to our NEPTUNESEAL meet the International standard: ISO\IEC 18000-6C EPC CLASS1 GEN2

DESCRIPTION:
° NEPTUNESEAL  is the first bolt type seal of its kind ISO 17712: 2010 approved,with the internal metal part exceeding  18 mm.

Our innovative (pat. pending) design is characterised by two metal tabs attached to the bolt, which slot securely into the closure canal of the “female” part of the seal.

This amendment to the traditional bolt seal design, requested by the new ISO norms, means it is no longer possible to  tamper the “female” part of the seal by spinning it at high speed.

Any Tampering attempt will damage the seal leaving it irreparable.
